With the expulsion of the Italian collectivity in 1970, the cemetery of El Hammangi in Tripoli (Libya) was abandoned for more than 30 years. The project concerned both technical and artistical works: green areas and irrigation system, electrical plants, cleaning of the external stone paneling, leveling and refurbishment of the soil, realization of access roads and parking areas, land ordnance remediation, as well as the restoration of works of art and the realization of new mosaics; it included the requalification of a huge area, difficult to be maintained, where the graves had been neglected after the exhumation of many corpses during the period of the expulsion. The design aimed at restoring and improving the site, downsizing and relocating the cemeterial area where the ex military shrine was; this one was accurately restored, along with the ecclesiastical chapel and the entry buildings, while the external areas were refurbished and new structures were built at the entrance of the cemetery.
